Why AI is a Game Changer for Personal Brand Building

I was scrolling through LinkedIn when I came across Emmanuel Faith’s post about how he used AI to assess his brand. He asked Meta AI one simple question: “Who is Emmanual Faith?” Emmanuel is a 4x Tedx speaker and HR professional with an amazing personal brand, so I was interested in learning more about what AI told him.

I was amazed by the fact that he said the tool could accurately articulate his brand message. I couldn’t resist, so I headed over to Microsoft’s Copilot and asked, “Who is Chanel Polk?” I, too, wondered if it could get my brand message right from what it found about me on the Internet. The answer blew me away. It appeared that Copilot grabbed my bio directly from my website and accurately filled in information about who I serve from sources across the web.

I also tried this exercise using the AI app Preplexity.ai, which has access to the web, but the results weren’t great. It produced a sentence or two about what I do and said it was pretty sure the person I was asking about wasn’t the same Chanel who is an inmate in a Polk County Jail. LOL!

This exercise got me to thinking about the impact AI is already having on personal branding. In just a few seconds, AI  provided me with valuable insight into my brand that I wouldn’t ordinarily be able to access easily or for free. Let’s take a closer look at the insight I gained from this brief but powerful interaction with AI.

Identifying Brand Messaging Gaps

I am a content writer and a developmental editor for self-published authors. Over the years, I’ve written content for small businesses, nonprofits and budding brands as an independent contractor and freelancer. While doing this, I’ve also worked as an editor, and now as a senior editor for a small literary services company that helps self-published authors complete books from start to publication.

I have an interesting assortment of skills, and it took time, but I figured out a way to present what I do and the services I offer in a way that makes sense to the people who need them. A big shift came in when ChatGPT became accessible to the public. I saw the importance of learning how to use it and other AI tools and felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility and urgency about helping others learn how to use it, too.

Full transparency—I thought I was knocking my brand messaging out of the park until I asked Microsoft Copilot who I was. I felt bad for like ten seconds, and then I had a serious lightbulb moment. If I could get out of my feelings, I could find the gaps in my messaging. I could see what was missing!

The whole AI piece is completely absent from the AI tool’s output, and so are the benefits of the services I provide. They’re explained on my website, but clearly, they aren’t stated in a way that’s impactful enough for an AI tool to pick up on. Does that mean a visitor to my website or potential client would miss this important piece of information, too? It’s likely.

Fixing Brand Messaging with AI

Thanks to all of one minute on an AI app, it’s much clearer to me how my brand may be perceived, and I know what I need to fix. But if AI could help me identify the gaps in my brand messaging, it can also show me how to fix them, right? Absolutely!

Based on my own assessment and the AI’s output, I’ve determined that I want to bring AI’s connection to content writing, content creation, and brand building to the forefront of my personal brand. This will change my message and how I use content marketing to spread the word about it and any products or services I develop.

To take this further, I can feed my current bio, home page, and services page content into ChatGPT and ask it to create a draft that includes what’s already listed there, plus the information I provide about AI to get a start on new website content.

Next, I can ask it to assess my target audience’s feelings about AI, create a list of their biggest pain points, and suggest ways for me to address them.

After that, I can ask it to help me brainstorm a brand message that would resonate with them most.

Guess what? You can follow these steps to elevate your personal brand, too.
