ChatGPT is the GPT-4 powered chatbot currently dominating the AI space that has triggered a massive shift in how we write content, carry out day-to-day tasks and even learn.
To use it, you have to ask it a question or enter instructions into its chat box. When you click the arrow, the chatbot goes to work, giving you answers to your questions, content, or other information you need. It’s easy to spend hours interacting with the AI-powered chatbot trying to get it to give you the exact results you want. If you’ve tried ChatGPT and spent more time on it than you intended, then you know what I mean.
The answer to this problem is learning how to write a good prompt.
What Are Prompts?
In the context of AI, a prompt is how we communicate with an AI system. It’s the words and numbers (and images) known as input we enter to get a specific response or output.
If you’ve ever written an essay or taken a creative writing class, you’ve likely used a writing prompt. Prompts for ChatGPT are similar in that they include specific instructions and important details that tell ChatGPT exactly what to do.
What Happens When You Use A Prompt?
When you type a prompt into ChatGPT’s chat box, the AI model processes it and generates the output you want based on its training data and algorithms.
When it comes to output, there are a few essential things to remember:
- AI tools like ChatGPT make mistakes, so it’s important to check to make sure it generates the output you’re looking for. Be sure to check for awkward sentences, repetition, factual errors and other mistakes.
- AI-generated output isn’t always 100% unique. Output may contain chunks of text currently published on the Internet, including full titles, headlines and other key pieces of content. Never use raw output without revising it, and conduct a search of all headlines and titles before using them to avoid the accidental use of someone else’s work.
How to Write a Good Prompt
To get the most out of ChatGPT, you need to understand how it views the information you type into its chatbox. Remember, it’s a computer program that views the information you give it like a formula, as all computer programs do.
Prompts for ChatGPT are a combination of natural language and structured language. Natural language is the way we naturally express ourselves with words. Structured language is a language designed to help computer programs process and understand information. It follows specific rules and guidelines and includes things like keywords, syntax, and symbols that are used in a consistent way.
Prompts for ChatGPT should be written the way you speak naturally and include specific instructions.
- In prompts used for natural language AI like Chat GPT, a description of the task to be performed is embedded in a question or instructions.
- The information in the prompt “trains” the language model, teaching it what it needs to know to perform the requested function.
- Prompts must be carefully worded and structured to receive the best output. Vague prompts or prompts that are missing important information will yield poor or inaccurate results.
Prompts for ChatGPT must include the following:
- Specific instructions
- Context
- The type of output required
When you’re writing a prompt, keep this simple formula in mind:
Instruction + Output Type + Context = Output
1. Instructions
Tell ChatGPT what to do with command words like
- Write
- Organize
- Summarize
- Assess
- Create
2. Output Type
It’s important to include a description of the type of output you need in your prompt. Tell ChatGPT if you’d like it to generate a blog post, a month’s worth of social media posts, content for an infographic, or other types of content. Remember, be as specific as possible.
3. Context
Context is an explanation of the purpose of the output you’re requesting, who it’s for, and other important information that explains the situation in which the output will be used. It helps ChatGPT “understand” what you need so it can generate the most appropriate output.
Context for content creation can include:
- A description of the industry or niche the output will be used for and the appropriate terminology that should be used.
- Demographic information, including the race, age, gender and location of your audience.
- Psychographic information, including your audience’s preferences, desires, beliefs and attitudes.
- A description of the style the output should be written in to ensure the output matches your brand voice, style and tone as closely as possible.
Prompt Example
Here’s a basic sample prompt to inspire your own:
Write an informational 600-word blog post about cats for readers who have never owned a cat before. The post should put them at ease about cat ownership, list the benefits of owning a cat and include a simple care and maintenance plan.
Output Troubleshooting
If you’re not satisfied with the quality of your output, do the following:
Regenerate output: Click or tap the regenerate button, and ChatGPT will create a second version of your output.
Revise and try again: Edit your prompt in that very same chat and ask ChatGPT to create new output based on the information provided in the new prompt.
Ask ChatGPT for help: Tell ChatGPT that the output you’ve received isn’t what you expected, and ask it to help you create a new prompt that can generate better output. Add the phrase “let’s think this through” to the end of the prompt to let the chatbot know you want its help.
Ask for different output in a different tone or style: AI-generated content can sometimes sound artificial. You can help ChatGPT create more natural-sounding output by being very specific about the voice, tone and style you like your content written in.
Control output length: Is your output too short or too long? Ask ChatGPT to revise it and make it the length you desire. Currently, ChatGPT can produce approximately 1000 words of content in each chat, but this may vary.
By learning how prompts work and following a simple prompt writing formula, you can create content with ChatGPT that aligns with your goals in less time. Remember to experiment, iterate, and always use AI responsibly to make the most of this powerful tool.
