5 Ways to Use ChatGPT as a Writing Assistant for Your Book

Writing a book is a worthwhile endeavor, but it isn’t easy. In the end, when you’re done putting in the work, you’ll have a book that fulfills your dream and that uplifts, educates or inspires others, but it takes a lot of time, focus and commitment to the project to get there.

In my time as an editor, I’ve seen even the best writers get stuck and become unsure of how to move their writing forward. This often happens when they’re up at 1 a.m. trying to meet a quickly approaching deadline. In that moment, their brain just stops giving. They run out of ideas or can’t make connections, and that either sparks mild panic or triggers discouragement.

One great tool for getting unstuck is ChatGPT. The AI-powered chatbot can be a great writing assistant that helps you work through your writing challenges and get you back on track. As with all AI, when you use ChatGPT, keep in mind that the responses it gives may contain inaccuracies and can even chunks of other people’s work, so only use it to inspire your own writing.

Here are 5 ways you can use ChatGPT to help you write your book:

1 . Use it to identify your ideal readers.

Writing a book can become hard really fast if you’re not sure who your book is for. For example, is your book about parenting for people with kids or people who want to have kids one day? If you don’t know, explain your problem to ChatGPT, tell the chatbot your writing goal plus a general idea of what you want to write about, and ask it to help you identify your ideal readers. Within seconds, with the use of ChatGPT’s output, you’ll have a better idea of who your readers are, and this will help you know where to focus your writing efforts.

2. It can help you refine what you want to write about.

If you have a broad idea of what you want to write about, like parenting, you’ll struggle to write if you don’t narrow it down and figure out exactly what you want to say. For instance, do you want to help parents navigate the “terrible twos,” walk them through the preteen years or focus on preparing teens for adulthood? If you have trouble selecting a topic, open ChatGPT and type “Create a list of book topics for a book about [insert subject or idea].” into the chat box and press enter to generate a list of possible topics you can write about.

3. It can help you brainstorm ideas.

Have a topic you want to write about, but you’re unsure what to say? Brainstorm with the help of ChatGPT. Type “What are 15 things people need to know about [insert your topic]?” into the chat box and press enter to generate a list of things your readers need to know about your topic. See which items on the ChatGPT-generated list fit well with your education, training or personal experiences and revise them as needed so they best showcase your expertise and allow you to provide the most value to your readers.

4. It helps you create an outline for your book.

Creating an outline is often the most challenging part of writing a book because it requires you to determine what you absolutely need to include in your book and what you must leave out. If you’re stuck, type “Create an outline about [insert your topic] for a nonfiction book.” into the chat box and press enter to generate a sample outline that can give you inspiration as you write your own.

5. Use it to check grammar, spelling and punctuation.

It’s hard to write with confidence if you’re not sure if you’re doing it right. If you want to write a book but struggle with grammar, spelling or punctuation, use ChatGPT to help you identify and correct the errors in your writing. Type “Assess this text for grammar, spelling and punctuation” into ChatGPT’s chat box, followed by the text you would like it to review, and click on the arrow or press enter to receive an assessment of your work. You can copy and paste up to 2000 words of text into GPT 3.5 at a time.
